One of my favorite foods is avocado. On a salad, by itself, with chips and salsa, whatever. I love it. Interesting fact, that love began during my college travels throughout Ecaudor, when I discovered that every sammich I ordered had some amazing, new, secret ingredient that made everything ten times better. Ever since, I've eaten avocados regularly. And these days, as a SoCal, nearly-vegan, I consume a fair amount of 'em.
Living in LA of course I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to the amazing Green Goodness that is Avocado. There's no shortage of them around here. In fact, I have friends with an avocado tree growing within reach of their patio, and we pick fresh Avo's all year round.

The story here, comes from my explanation of how "sad" my first NE Avocado was, as told to artist/filmmaker Alex Hansen, and fellow artist friend, painter Kenneth Nicholson.
"Somehow," I explained "this avocado was both Not At All Ripe, yet already Spoiled and Brown."
A total disappointment by Avocado Standards.
"Hmmm," responded Kenneth, a Pittsburgh native, standing in his Philly studio space surrounded by paintings in various states of progress and completion, the true human emotion of misery being the main subject, "That perfectly describes Philadelphia."
And there you have it. New York ie The Big Apple; Chicago ie The Windy City; and Philadelphia aka The Sad Avocado.
